St. Pius Has Slight Edge In 4A Event

FARMINGTON They've never actually been to the summit, but that hasn't kept La Cueva's Bears from being anointed kings of New Mexico's Class 5A baseball hill in 2003.

Not that the praise isn't deserved. La Cueva carries a spotless 27-0 record into Friday's Class 5A semifinals at Farmington's Ricketts Park and features a deep, superbly talented lineup that has steamrolled opponents all season.

Keeping the Bears off the hilltop certainly will be a man-sized chore, but history is one factor not on La Cueva's side. Del Norte, Valley and Las Cruces haven't won state baseball titles in 21 years or more, but La Cueva is the only school among the 5A semifinalists never to have won one. …
