Albuquerque is Santa Fe and locals are tourists as crews put another Hillerman novel on film for PBS

Nothing is what it seems at the movies, or on a movie set.It's midday Wednesday, and a film crew has blocked off a street in Albuquerque's Old Town to shoot a scene in a movie version of Tony Hillerman's novel "A Thief of Time." Tourists stand around outside an art gallery, but they're not really tourists and that's not really an art gallery; they're extras in the film and the art gallery is actually an interior design store that has been decorated for the day with borrowed paintings.

"I never dress like this in real life," says extra Valerie Mainville of Edgewood, squinting in the glare of a 50,000-watt light that illuminates the set. …
