Juan Steen Showed What He's Made Of

When the season started, senior Juan Steen was considered a low-number card in the Moriarty High baseball team's pitching-rich deck.

Now he's got ace written all over him.

Steen trumped Taos with a two-hitter in a Class 4A Region C playoff game on a blustery Saturday, and the Pintos tamed the visiting Tigers 9-2 to advance to the state playoffs for the second consecutive year.

"I didn't expect to pitch much this year," said Steen, who struck out nine and allowed no earned runs. "But I'm throwing the ball a lot harder, and I've gained confidence in myself. This one gave me big confidence."

Moriarty (21-4) opens the state tournament against Onate on Friday at Ricketts Field in Farmington starting at 7:45 p.m. The Pintos finished third at the state finals last year.

"Juan knows his job and his role on this team," said Moriarty coach Michael Chavez. …
