Winds May Prevent Controlled Burns.(Mountain View)

Recent dry weather conditions and high winds have caused Torrance County Fire Marshal Shirley Whatley to deny several requests for burn permits.

"I understand people want to burn their shrubs," Whatley said earlier this week, "but we can't take the risk that the high winds will turn a controlled burn into an uncontrollable wildfire."

Torrance County residents are required to contact the Torrance County Dispatch Center each time they want to burn.

"That doesn't mean they will automatically be allowed to burn," Whatley said. "The dispatchers will on my authority authorize or deny burn permits, based upon wind and weather conditions. …
