APS To Discuss West Mesa Plan

Albuquerque Public Schools officials will be at West Mesa High School at 8 a.m. today to release information about the cluster's math, science and technology magnet program.

The program became the center of controversy in 2001 after a committee awarded startup funds to the Sandia High School cluster even though the West Mesa cluster earned more points in a complicated selection process.

The purpose of the magnet program is to increase the success of traditionally underrepresented students in mathematics, science and technology. It is meant to be a bridge between the district's elementary, middle and high schools.

Superintendent Joseph Vigil, the lead superintendent for the district, said Wednesday he would talk about future funding for the West Mesa cluster during today's meeting. …
