Worker Mistakenly Cuts Off Oxygen to 230,000 Rainbows

PECOS Oops.

Nearly 230,000 rainbow trout at a state fish hatchery here were killed when a Game and Fish Department worker accidentally shut off their oxygen supply, the department said Wednesday.

Last week's kill of the estimated 20,000 pounds of rainbows one of the state's most popular game and eating fish came less than two weeks after the Lisboa Springs Fish Hatchery reopened just north of the village of Pecos on the Pecos River.

The hatchery had closed in 2001 after whirling disease was discovered there, and all the fish in the hatchery at the time were intentionally destroyed. …
