As the Rio Rancho City Council puts the finishing touches on next year's fiscal budget, one line item jumps out for special consideration.

The city's main public library has been desperate for more space and staff for quite some time, according to Toni Beatty, director of the city's public library.

While state and county funds will likely lead to the construction of a new library by 2006, the needs of the Esther Bone Memorial Library can't slide until then.

The library was built to hold 60,000 books; its current collection stands at 120,000. More volumes put a strain on the current staff Beatty equates reshelving duties at Esther Bone to a busy restaurant's dish-washer who never manages to catch up. …
