Tourist Tax OK for Buses.(Journal North)(Editorial)


Santa Fe's City Council is considering using lodgers' tax money to boost the budget for the city bus system.

While we don't often endorse efforts to spend revenues from special taxes on unrelated budget items, in this case the idea makes a certain amount of sense.

For one thing, the amount of money involved is trivial. The lodgers' tax nets the city more than $5 million a year. The city already spends $150,000 of that on the bus system, and City Councilor David Coss is proposing that $120,000 more should be diverted, for "amenities" including better bus-stop benches and improvements for disabled people. …
