N.M. riders train to compete in dressage at the Special Olympics World Games in Ireland

The Doctor of Laughter grunted as he trotted along, his hoofs kicking up dust that floated into the warm afternoon breeze.

"Come on Doc, come on," said Pam Edwards of Carlsbad, the thoroughbred's rider and a member of New Mexico's Special Olympics equestrian team. "That's a boy, good boy."

What seemed impractical for the small Edwards on such a large animal became reality as she demonstrated her skills Tuesday for family, friends, trainers and media at the Las Campanas Equestrian Center.

Her short legs putting heel to the Doctor's dark brown and muscular side was all she needed to get him to trot, even gallop. …
