Ted Schifani, a two-term president of the New Mexico Zoological Society, twice was honored with a day in his name for his services to the city.

The longtime Albuquerque businessman died Monday at Presbyterian Hospital of complications from pulmonary fibrosis, scarring of the lungs. Schifani was 83.

Schifani donated a number of animals to the zoo, including a pair of white rhinos, a jaguar and a zebra, said his son, Frank Schifani of San Gabriel, Calif.

He said the rhinoceroses are still alive and the jaguar turned out to be one of the most prolific in captivity with offspring "all over."

"His love and passion was the zoo," his son said. …
