Cop Wages Among Debate Possibilities

Police wages, social services and money for school programs are among issues that could be the focus of debate today as cit councilors consider changing the mayor's budget proposal.

Councilors will meet at 5 p.m. at City Council chambers to discuss amendments to the $350 million general-fund proposal. It covers operations of most city departments in the fiscal year, which begins in July.

There will be no public comment period, but the budget is expected to come up again at a council meeting Monday.

Miguel Gomez said he will try to preserve money for some of the social service contracts that were targeted for cuts by Mayor Martin Chavez. …
