U.G. "Monte" Montgomery laid the foundation that led the New Mexico Activities Association into the modern era.

The former NMAA executive director, who also was a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent, died April 15 in Albuquerque after a six-month illness. He was 94.

Montgomery was the association's second director, taking over in 1952 for Morris Ward, who had served two years. Montgomery held the job for 22 years, said Jim Hulsman, a friend and former Albuquerque High basketball coach.

He said Montgomery "lived by the 'rule book,' '' setting a precedent for future leaders. …
