* Private talk with New Mexicans inspires comments in Bush's speech

BERNALILLO Phil Archuletta, who owns a sign manufacturing company in Mountainair, said President Bush's tax-cut plan means he would be able to expand his business.

"We'll be able to bring more jobs into the rural economy," said Archuletta, who owns P&M Signs Inc.

Archuletta was among a handful of small-business owners and employees who got to sit down for a private, half-hour chat with President Bush on Monday, before his speech at MCT Industries Inc.

Bush later on, in the speech, used the stories of Archuletta and the other New Mexicans he visited to put "faces" on his tax-cut plan.

He noted in the speech that his plan would, among other things, raise the annual cap on what small businesses are able to deduct from their taxes for investment expenditures from $25,000 to $75,000. …
