State Districts Boosting Pay 6 Percent Next Year

Albuquerque Public Schools has traveled the globe in recent years, searching for new teachers during a national shortage.

But this year, APS said its demand for new hires appears to be down because the economy is causing people to hold on to their jobs.

As districts elsewhere face teacher layoffs and hiring freezes because of state budget woes, New Mexico districts are giving teachers a 6 percent pay raise next year.

"We're not seeing a lot of requests from principals to fill positions right now," said APS human resources director Gena Jones. …
