Chris Alexander drove in six runs and set the University of New Mexico single-season record for homers after going deep twice Sunday as the Lobos baseball team finally beat No. 16 UNLV.
Although Alexander's heroics kept UNM (34-21, 17-10 Mountain West Conference) in the game, it was No. 9 hitter Mike Svetlic's leadoff triple in the bottom of the eighth that helped send New Mexico on to the 13-10 victory at Lobo Field.
The win gives New Mexico a 1 1/2 game lead over Brigham Young for second place in the conference. UNM is fighting for the second seed in the MWC tournament, which will be at Isotopes Park May 21-24.
The 5-foot, 9-inch Svetlic hammered a shot off the center-field wall, then scored the tiebreaking run on Dusty Young's high bouncer in the eighth to put UNM ahead 11-10. …
