Iowa's 17 Hits Too Much to Overcome

On a day when the Albuquerque Isotopes got very little hitting, they got even less pitching.

The Iowa Cubs pounded out 17 hits to beat Albuquerque 9-3 on Sunday afternoon at Isotopes Park, dropping the two clubs back into a tie for last place in the Central Division of the Pacific Coast League.

Isotopes manager Dean Treanor seemed almost angry as he talked about the state of his pitching staff after the game.

''They're doing the best they can,'' Treanor said.

Much to Treanor's dismay, the Isotopes' pitching staff has been the picture of instability: Three pitchers are on the disabled list; starter Justin Wayne has been up and down to the parent Florida Marlins three times; two pitchers were released; two were sent up from Double-A Carolina; two were sent down by the Marlins; four are with the Marlins; and two relievers have had to become regular starters. …
