St. Michael's Super Athlete Excels at Multiple Sports

The moments that define a gifted athlete's greatness can often be measured by the length of his or her stat sheet. For some, though, they can go one step further by doing things that will leave lasting impressions.

In the frenzy of competition, those moments often come when the pressure is on and the outcome of a game or season as the case may be is on the line.

For Thomas Romero, a multi-talented student from St. Michael's High School, those moments came often during his junior year with the school's football, basketball and baseball programs.

For those times, not to mention the successes that resulted from them, he has been named the Journal North Male Athlete of the Year for 2002-03.

Although it could be argued there were better players in each of Romero's three sports, one would be hard pressed to find a more well-rounded athlete. Standing 5 feet, 10 inches and tipping the scales at 165 pounds, he was truly a man for all seasons.

"I don't know how he did it, but I do know this his body has got to be completely worn out right about now," said Matt Pribble, Romero's coach on the Horsemen basketball team. "Thomas' attitude is what does it for him. He's strong for his size, but I think his mind is even better. There's players out there with just as much ability as he has, but they just don't think the way he does. …
