Des Moines High's Brandy Atwater Has Led Teams to 6 Championships

The fact that Brandy Atwater is a household name in her postage stamp-size hometown of Folsom (pop. 72) shouldn't come as much of a surprise. After all, her dad's the mayor, and her immediate family comprises a full 8 percent of the town's population.

The fact that she's made such a name for herself on the athletic front across New Mexico should.

A senior at nearby Des Moines High School, a school with just 12 seniors and 50 students in grades 8-12, Atwater transcended the restraints of her tiny town to become one of the state's most decorated athletes during her high school career.

Winning six team state championships in her five years in the Lady Demons' black and yellow uniforms, she capped her remarkable ride through the high school ranks with back-to-back titles in basketball and volleyball her final two seasons.

Her senior campaign was all the more impressive, considering she was nearly sidelined permanently with a serious shoulder injury. She was also hampered by the overwhelming success of her own teams. With both clubs finishing 26-1, her playing time was often reduced to a fraction of what it normally would have been had the team not been so dominating.

Still, she compiled enough impressive statistics and garnered enough respect from peers and coaches around the state to earn the Journal North Female Athlete of the Year honors for the 2002-03 school year. …
