* St. Michael's brand of small ball kept the Colts off balance and off the scoreboard

Thanks to an arm that felt like Jell-O and plenty of small ball, the St. Michael's baseball team will be playing in the Class 3A state tournament next week in Farmington.

Behind the two-hit pitching of ace Jerrid Garcia and a two-hit, four-RBI performance from catcher Julio Gomez, the Horsemen (19-8) eliminated two-time defending state champion New Mexico Military Institute (14-12) in a regional contest Saturday at Brother Edward de Reyna Park, 7-0.

Batting cleanup, Gomez drove in the first two and last two runs of the day with a single in the third inning and a double off the fence in left in the sixth. The latter came during the Horsemen's five-run outburst to put the game out of reach.

In between, Garcia and his defense held the Colts in check from start to finish. …
