Water Shortage Dead Ahead.(Journal North)(Editorial)


It's official: We now have a water plan for the future of the Santa Fe region, including Los Alamos and Espanola. Accepted by the Interstate Stream Commission late last month, the plan shows conclusively that we will run short of water near the end of this decade and will be seriously short of water in less than a generation.

This is not news. As we have recently discovered, demand for water already exceeds supply during drought. What is news, however, is that the plan effectively torpedoes the notion that we will be able to avert the shortage easily.

The conventional wisdom has been that between conserving the water we have now through outdoor watering restrictions and low-flow toilet retrofits and the like and tapping into our so-far unused share of San Juan-Chama surface water, we'll be able to cover the growing demand for water into the future. …
