The strong winds that whipped across the ball fields at the Santa Fe Municipal Recreation Complex on Saturday ripped tents off their poles, kicked up blinding dust and ruffled a lot of fur.

But Carli didn't seem to mind.

The 4-year-old Shetland Sheepdog stood perfectly still on a grooming table as her owner, Judy Rayburn, sprayed coat conditioner on the dog.

"It's so dry here," the Greeley, Colo., resident explained. "It's a bad hair day."

Even so, Rayburn and hundreds of other dog owners eagerly prepared their pride and joy for competition at the Sangre de Cristo Kennel Club's all-breeds show.

The two-day event, which came to a close on Saturday, drew about 1,200 dogs from all over the country, according to Sangre de Cristo Kennel Club member Lynn Peterson. …
