N.Y. energy influences choreographer.(Final)

Dancer/choreographer Kota Yamazaki is a longtime exponent of butoh, a contemporary avant-garde dance form that originated in Japan 40 years ago.

But being a part-time resident of New York City, Yamazaki wanted to fuse butoh which has since incorporated theater and performance art with his experiences in the Big Apple.

The result is the 2002 dance "Meronna," which he and his dance partner Mina Nishimura will perform Tuesday at UNM's Rodey Theatre.

Yamazaki said there were three influences on the choreography for "Meronna."

One was age.

"Getting older, physically, I gradually change my movement from aggressive to slower. …
