Polish contralto creates 'sensation' with voice.(Final)

Polish contralto Ewa Podles frequently explains the nature of her unusual and complex voice to those who are used to thinking of a contralto as a type of voice that is simply lower than an alto.

"A true contralto includes the top of a soprano, middle register of a mezzo and bottom of an alto," she explains by e-mail from Poland. "In addition to the three-octave range, a true contralto also needs to have coloratura. So it really is all four female voice types in one. I feel comfortable singing in all three octaves, but I guess if I were to choose, I would say that I love singing in the low register most of all."
