Native American arts were once the exclusive province of ethnographers and anthropologists. "Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation, 1" at the New Mexico Museum of Fine Arts is the first of a three-part series of exhibitions designed to alter those perceptions.

The project is the brainchild of New York Museum of Arts and Design chief curator David Revere McFadden and independent New York curator Ellen Napiura Taubman.

"The germ of the show grew out of an evaluation of our collection and our mission which is to support emerging and under-recognized artists ... contemporary Native American artists who are working in the 21st century," McFadden said. …
