Leo Neufeld carves out a niche as portrait painter

Leo Neufeld's heart was always in art. But in 1974, forced by the need to earn a living, Neufeld's body was into house painting. That year he met a successful portrait artist who gave him advice that was a turning point in Neufeld's professional life.

"His name was James Ingwersen and he told me, 'You need to quit and go to art school if you're serious about this,' '' Neufeld recalled.

"He said, 'You really have to commit yourself for five years, and if at the end of five years if you don't know that you've made the right decision then you should go do something else.' ''

Neufeld took the advice and knew as soon as he enrolled in art school the famous Art Students League in New York City that he had made the right choice.
