CARLSBAD The two-time defending 5A softball champion Carlsbad Cavegirls know a good thing when they see it. Any means of getting to the next round of the playoffs always is a good thing.

One mighty, wind-aided triple to deep right helped visiting Sandia to a 1-0 first-inning lead over the Cavegirls on Saturday, but it was Carlsbad that emerged with a 6-1 regional victory.

Although the Cavegirls (20-7) didn't muster a hit that was solid in their half of the first inning, they still managed to get four runs and quickly recapture the momentum.

With the victory, the Carlsbad moves on to play Alamogordo in the state semifinals Friday in Las Cruces.

Sandia (20-7), the District 2-5A runner-up, scored first when Kailey Yarmer helped by a strong wind drove a ball the opposite way off the right-field fence to send in Jessica Bailey. …
