Even now, La Cueva is cast as one of state's best baseball teams ever

Best of 2003? The purists, the traditionalists, the old timers, the unbiased even eternally grumpy cynics they'd all have to concede that the La Cueva Bears reign supreme over New Mexico baseball.

But ... just for the sake of argument, let's realign the parameters of the discussion. Pull back from that closeup to a wide-screen view. Think long and hard before responding.

La Cueva 2003: Best New Mexico baseball team EVER?

The time has come to consider the possibility. Spanning the eras since the first New Mexico state champion was crowned in 1940, does La Cueva's dominance transcend the generations?

"This La Cueva team stacks up against any team that I've seen in the last 25 years," says longtime Eldorado baseball coach Jim Johns. "Regardless of whether they go undefeated or not."

With every oncoming team in its path that No. 1 La Cueva (26-0) has pancaked, the Bears' indestructibility factor grows exponentially. La Cueva in full swagger of late as it cut a wide swath through outmanned District 2-5A is both the irresistible force and the immovable object rolled into one behemoth.

Ranking the Bears on an all-time list isn't nearly so simple.

Only one other team in modern state history, Carlsbad, has ever sported a 26-0 record in the largest classification. …
