Mission Avenue Elementary Turns 50.(West Side Journal)

Mission Avenue Elementary has sat on a hill in the North Valley for half a century. On Monday it will celebrate its 50th birthday with a multicultural event.

The celebration will highlight the school's efforts to integrate arts into the overall educational experience.

Principal Stephen Pino said he believes in giving all students a well-rounded education.

"I believe having a well-rounded program in the arts and education has benefits for children," he said. "I think it gives students an area to shine in areas that may otherwise go unnoticed. It is an enrichment of oneself."

About 200 students in grades three through five will show off what they have spent the last six months learning under the direction of two professional artists the school hired as artists in residence. …
