Horsemen Aim To Win Baseball Title Other baseball

Former St. Michael's baseball coach Richard Lopez, the patriarch of the Horsemen's mid-1980s run to baseball prominence, began every season by gathering his players and reminding them that the school had never, not in the extended history of the state's oldest prep institution, ever won a baseball state championship.

For a school that can trace its roots to 1859, that's a long time to wait.

Of course, the Horsemen haven't been playing baseball for that long. It just seems that way when the litany of coaches and players associated with the program talk about its numerous postseason shortfalls.

Today, the 2003 version of Horsemen (18-8) baseball gets its shot at easing the pain of the past as New Mexico Military Institute (14-11) comes to town for the Class 3A regionals. …
