Quarai spotlights bird conservation

The second Sunday of May belongs to mothers. But the second Saturday of May is for the birds.

For the 11th year, International Migratory Bird Day will be observed in town squares, parks and refuges across the country on the second Saturday of May. The aim of the event is to draw attention to migratory bird conservation.

In New Mexico, this special day will again be hosted by Quarai, one of three units that comprise Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument north of Mountainair.

Kicking off the day will be a leisurely, three-hour morning bird walk led by Hart Schwarz, neotropical bird specialist for the Cibola National Forest, and local birder Nick Vaughn. …
