EDITOR'S NOTE: The following article is the last in a four-part series about migratory birds that stop each spring at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge after wintering in Central and South America.

The blue grosbeak is one of Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge's few migrating songbirds with a descriptive name: The male is a deep blue color and a large beak. The female is a warm brown, and her beak is also large.

As you drive the refuge tour loop, listen for the male blue grosbeak's melodic song, often coming from a perch in a tree top. Also watch for the birds feeding on the ground, in low shrubs or in weedy areas with scattered trees. …
