More employees surf the Net at work and more employers are cracking down

As the Internet becomes ubiquitous in the workplace, employers say it remains a double-edged sword that can boost efficiency or drag a company down.

"It's a wonderful tool, but it's also a distraction," said Judy Luttrell, vice president and regional human resources manager for Bank of Albuquerque.

Consider the findings of a survey:

* 37.1 percent of employees said they surf the Web "constantly" at work;

* 31.9 percent said they surf a few times a day;

* 21.3 percent said they surf a few times a week; and

* 9.7 percent said they never surf at work., a job-hunting Internet company, surveyed 1,004 employees in what it called the first comprehensive survey of e-mail behavior in the workplace. …
