St. Pius To Face Off With Academy.(West Side Journal)

Sartans' Pitcher A One-Woman Show

There's nothing wrong with sharing, but St. Pius pitcher Priscilla Garcia doesn't mind a solo act, either.

The Sartans' standout sophomore, who shared pitching duties last year with then-senior Amy Junick, has been given the ball in all but one of her team's games this year. On Saturday, Garcia will be asked to shut down Albuquerque Academy (18-7) when the two rivals meet at 11 a.m. at St. Pius in one of four Class 4A regional matchups.

St. Pius is 18-6; Garcia's record is 17-6. Nearly as impressive as her win total is, she pitches the bulk of the team's innings and rarely rests.

"She's no longer a sophomore," St. Pius coach Mark Rhoten said. "She's matured so much over the season (because) she's got such a great work ethic, and she's her own best critic. If she struggles, she self-corrects. That's a good mentality for a pitcher."

With better-than-average velocity, a variety of spin pitches, a change-up and a riser, Garcia's arsenal was not threatened as the Sartans cruised to the District 2-4A championship.

But Saturday's game will be, in truth, the first major test of the season because it's an elimination game. …
