Santa Fe city officials have resolved a couple of thorny Downtown traffic problems in recent months through a couple of intelligent compromises.

The question of how much motor vehicle traffic to allow circulating around the Plaza is the more high-profile of the two. The City Council has backed off the total ban on vehicular traffic imposed last fall in the wake of one fatal and a near-fatal accident involving visiting pedestrians.

Partly in deference to locals passionate about the idea of cruising around the Plaza in their cars, the council has decided to allow traffic back. But in what appears to be a good compromise between pedestrian safety and vehicular access, the cars will now travel in one direction only, and only on three sides of the square. …
