Lead Investigator Killed by Police

Prosecutors are moving forward with a criminal case against an Espanola judge, despite the recent death of their lead investigator.

Karen Yontz, who worked for the state Attorney General's Office, helped build the case against suspended Municipal Judge Charles Maestas, who faces 28 counts of extortion, criminal sexual penetration and other charges, officials said.

Police shot and killed Yontz, at the time a bank robbery suspect, Friday in Albuquerque.

Maestas' trial begins next month in Tierra Amarilla, in state District Court.

"We are reassigning Karen's responsibilities and preparing to go to trial," said Sam Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Attorney General's Office. …
