The Sandia Ranger District began a prescribed burn in the 10K trailhead area just east of the Sandia Crest Overlook on Tuesday.

The Crest Aspen Burn will cover about 30 acres, and smoke will be visible from Albuquerque and the East Mountain area.

The goal of the burn is to help restore aspen stands to the forest and improve wildlife habitat, according to a news release from the Cibola National Forest, Sandia Ranger District. The burning also reduces the risk of catastrophic wildfires by decreasing the accumulation of vegetation, the release said. …
