June Fire Happened At Tesuque Pueblo

Defense lawyers and prosecutors are working on a plea agreement for two men from Tesuque Pueblo who have been charged with burning the village's San Diego Catholic Church, U.S. District Court records show.

George Victor Downey, 21, and Jason Tapia, 20, were charged in the summer with arson after the church interior was destroyed on June 3, court records show.

A trial was scheduled to begin this week, but defense lawyers filed a motion to allow for more time to negotiate a settlement, records show.

"We're trying to work something out that would be fair in light of the circumstances," said Bill Parnall, Downey's lawyer. …
