Safety Tax Pitched To Council.(Final)

A proposal to put a quarter-cent tax for public safety on the ballot got a warm reception from speakers at Monday's City Council meeting.

The council scheduled the bill for final action on May 19.

"We have to find additional money," Albuquerque firefighter Kevin Pearce told councilors. "The quarter-cent tax for public safety is desperately needed."

City Councilor Eric Griego, who sponsored the bill, said the tax would provide money to add about 100 officers to the police force, upgrade equipment and fund crime-prevention and treatment programs.
