Nellos Family Speaks Against Death Penalty

The family of murder victim Nick Nellos turned an occasion of pain into one of affirmation Monday at a plea hearing for one of two suspects in the fatal July 2002 shooting.

Timothy Hawkins, 31, the Los Angeles-area suspected Crips gang member who had been set for trial this week, pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of the Albuquerque businessman, husband and father whose pickup was broadsided by the car driven by Hawkins' companion, Clark Perry, 29, of Chicago. Perry has not been brought to trial yet.

Hawkins also entered guilty pleas to a string of other crimes before and after the early morning shooting July 3, 2002 kidnapping, armed robbery and aggravated battery among them. …
