New Mexico Rivers Are Hidden Gems for Fly-Fishing.(Journal North)

When Brad Pitt catapulted fly-fishing into the spotlight in the film "A River Runs Through It," he created ripples that have only just begun to subside, said Scott Geary a fly-fishing guide in Santa Fe.

Interest in the sport soared after the movie came out but has begun to level off in the last few years, Geary said. The fishing guide has fished waters from Maine to Mexico, and New Mexico fly-fishing is as good as it gets, he said.

Despite its top-notch fishing, New Mexico could never be the setting for a coming-of-age fly-fishing movie, let alone a world-class fishing destination, Geary said.

"Fish like water," Geary said, and New Mexico simply doesn't have enough of it to make the state a top destination for fly fishers, he said. …
