As far as the city is concerned, a proposed shakeup of the Parks and Recreation Department will have little effect on the future of the New Mexico Games.

But to listen to Fred Hultberg, the driving force behind the annual series of Olympic-style, amateur competitions, the city's plan could sound the death knell for the Games.

That would be a sad day for at least some of the 8,000-plus competitors, as well as the many businesses that look forward to the Games every year.

"I'm an old athlete, so I just love the Games," said pole vaulter and city councilor Brad Winter. "It benefits everybody."

Especially local businesses.

"For Albuquerque, it's important," said Dan Ballou, director of sports marketing for the Albuquerque Convention and Business Bureau. …
