Santa Fe author pens 'Stillness,' a how-to guide to finding solitude

Henry David Thoreau he's not, but Richard Mahler's three months in a remote cabin in the Tusas Mountains has triggered a book, "Stillness," which has realistic suggestions for finding solitude in everyday life.

For city dwellers the search might mean ... shutting off the TV, driving with the radio off, installing double-pane windows to block out the drone of passing cars.

Ah, that solitude.

Mahler, a Santa Fe resident, mixes diary entries from his days in the cabin with other personal experiences as well as quotes from many published seekers of quiet and reams of his own advice in finding what he likes to call "alone-time. …
