Greek Community Matriarch Was Mentor to Many.(Journal North)(Obituary)

Efterpi "Yiayia" Kalangis, 90, was among the last of an immigrant Greek community that found a home in Santa Fe starting in the early 20th century.

She died Thursday in the home at Don Gaspar Avenue and Booth Street where she and her husband first moved in the 1930s, said her granddaughter, Kristin Kalangis of Santa Fe.

"She was quite a mentor in the Greek community, a real matriarch for the women, always welcoming anyone into her home," her granddaughter said Friday. "Her home had a revolving door. Everyone had to come and enjoy being with Yiayia and her cooking. She was always doing something to make everyone feel comfortable. …
