Chavez Helps Bridge Gaps in South Valley.(Final)

It's fitting that Melcor Chavez's business is located on Bridge Street. For 30 years, he and his martial-arts academy have served as a bridge to a better life for kids in the South Valley.

"Melcor's done a wonderful job for this community," Ray Barrera, a martial-arts colleague, said Saturday at Rio Grande High School. The occasion was a day-long karate, kick-boxing and boxing tournament held to commemorate Chavez Karate's 30th anniversary.

The past few years, Chavez has done his job while working in the shadow of skin cancer. An avid deep-sea fisherman he fulfilled a long-cherished dream three years ago by landing an 800-pound marlin off the coast of Maui he now must consider the outdoors his enemy. …
