Do-not-call lists can reduce telemarketing calls dramatically and you can do the same with junk mail

Frederick P. Clark was fed up with the onslaught of sales pitches. So more than seven years ago, the now retired Albuquerque resident and his wife, Lorraine, cleared most of the junk mail from their mailbox and silenced the telemarketing rings on their phone.

"There's certainly less paper waste, but I think the nicest thing is when the phone rings, it's legitimate," Clark said. "We don't have to be worried about who it is at the other end of the line plus we don't get interrupted at dinner."

The Clarks registered their names, address and phone number with the Direct Marketing Association's consumer preference services in the mid-1990s. …
