Saying he was humbled by the honor, Edward Romero, the former United States ambassador to Spain and Andorra, accepted the Albuquerque Museum Foundation's third annual "Notable New Mexican" award Saturday.

Notable New Mexican is an honor given to living residents of the state in recognition of their achievements and contributions to New Mexico.

Romero, 69, was appointed as U.S. ambassador to Spain by President Clinton in 1998 and served until 2001.

More than 700 people attended a windy reception in the sculpture garden of the Albuquerque Museum, where the menu included shrimp canapes and Spanish sparkling wine. …
