Maybe instead of long-stemmed but short-lived roses this year, you can volunteer to help save a child on Mother's Day.

Linda and Owen Wells of Albuquerque, whose daughter, Kailee, has severe aplastic anemia, organized a national bone marrow donor drive on the Saturday before Mother's Day that asks you to honor your mother by giving other mothers "the gift of life."

Kailee Wells, 6, needs a bone marrow transplant. So do thousands of others with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia and several kinds of cancer.

Kailee was diagnosed more than a year ago, but her mother said Saturday that her blood counts are dangerously low. Kailee's doctor told her that if there were a match, he'd do the transplant now. There isn't one.

There is an urgent need for donors ages 18 to 60 who are Hispanic, African-American, American Indian and Asian. …
