Marathon running can be a great way to build strength, endurance even friendship

Marathon. The very word strikes terror in the hearts of many runners.

Maybe it's because the first marathon runner, a Greek messenger bearing news of a military victory, dropped dead after running 26.2 miles from a town called Marathon to Athens in 400 B.C.

While marathon running is not the easiest sport, it need not be daunting, says Rodger Sack, president of the Albuquerque Roadrunners club.

"Marathon runners come in all sizes and shapes," he says.

You don't have to be super skinny to go the distance. Nor do you have to be fast. Oprah Winfrey and Al Gore have trained for and run marathons.

Judy Beckes-Talcott, 45, and Erika Rimson, 42, decided to run their first marathon this year as a logical progression in their running regimen. …
