Petroglyph Walk, Talk Aim To Shift Attitudes.(West Side)

A walk and lecture created with the intention of changing people's way of thinking on conserving area historical sites will be held today at the Petroglyph National Monument.

"Don't use the word preservation. You preserve pickles, not people," said Kurt Anschuetz, archaeologist and program director for the Rio Grande Foundation for Communities and Cultural Landscapes.

Anschuetz, who will lead today's lecture, said he learned about the connotations of the word preservation while working with people in area American Indian communities.

He said sites such as the Petroglyph National Monument were important in the past and are still significant. …
