Instructor Named As Finalist for Honor

Intel thinks Rio Rancho High School SciMatics head Russ Fisher-Ives might be one of the best teachers in the world.

He has been nominated for the 2003 Intel Excellence in Teaching Award along with four others from around the world.

His competition hails from New York, Brazil, China and Russia. The five finalists have earned an expenses-paid trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, $3,500 and a high-performance computer. The fair will be May 11-17 in Cleveland.

The winner will receive an additional $1,500 and a $20,000 grant to use towards their program.

Fisher-Ives was nominated for his leadership in establishing the twice-a-year student research expo at the high school. The expo is to students today what the science fair was to their parents, Fisher-Ives said. However, the expo is geared toward teaching students how to use critical-thinking skills.
